They can be removed independently. You need to disconnect the clutch fork from the transmission to separate the two.
This may help you-The link won't post correctly. Sorry.
Just do a search with the words "engine, drop, separate" and you will find great info on the process.
I find it easier to drop both but others find the opposite to be true for them.
