After screwing with these things and rebuilding them more than once ( I was bored and curious) I believe it is possible to build one with the joint body facing backwards. The big test is if the hub travels freely once it is all together. If you want I can see if I can build one backwards just for giggles ( did I mention I have an odd sense of humor) I guess it could even out the wear...So would swapping left to right...Whatever... more likely...It doesn't make much of a diff as long as the groove side faces the circlip and the joint hub moves and flexes freely.
BTW, it looks to me as if it was right to begin with.
