I would say that yes, that is the case.
You take a 60's stingray vette, and that is every bit as iconic as the 911 shape, but GM had the guts to let the shape go and thank god, otherwise we'd have never had the beautiful mako sharks or the newer bodystyles that followed.
Same for the mustang, Camaro, Trans Am, or any of a gillion other iconic car designs throughout time.
Then again, if your new design looks like the Panamera, i guess there's a lot to be said for being afraid to move on from an old and proven design.
