Hannah is my all time favorite rider and who doesn't respect Decoster, but I think Carmichael was better than McGrath on similar modern motocross bikes. Carmichael pushed the envelope farther than McGrath and more often rode closer to the edge "successfully" than any other riders IMO. I watched him as a kid on 60s/80s when I raced at the US amateur nationals in the late 80s early 90s.... The kid could barely touch the pegs on the 80 but he flat out flew even back then when his mother was taking him to the races.
Too bad Pastrana did not focus on racing as I believe he was perhaps the most gifted while possessing the most extreme WFO MX mentality I have seen to date.
