Seems risky to me. Maybe his buddy is a soils engineer.
Back to weed killer: I've been advised that products like Round Up are drawn into plant's roots but can leach out when the plant decomposes. The residue on the surface is going to be attracted by live plants until if become ineffective. Do we know how long that is?
In short, I'd curtail the use of weed killers in the vegetable garden and near by.
