I don't understand why you have to buy a new car when you have the Mercs and the A4. How many kids are you planning to have and how long would you keep the the new car?
Really, two kids in the A4 with luggage in the trunk would be just fine. It's American to bring the living room and kitchen along on a road trip, but it's just unnecessary.
If you really "want" space and you plan to keep the vehicle long enough to get through a few kids, then just get a big vehicle like a minivan (Honda Odessey) or an SUV (GMC Acadia or Chevy Traverse).
If we didn't have 5 kids, I'd make my wife drive a use 5-series or E-class. 2 adults and three kids fit just fine in my E39. Even with a baby seat in the middle of the back seat.
I've had (wife's is still but never had issues) a vehicle under warranty, and it's not worth it to me. I still had to waste my time at the dealer, and if they don't fix it right I have to waste more time at the dealer. In the end, it would have taken me less time to fix it myself. Sure the security of a warranty is nice, and they want you to want that security. But for me... Forgetaboutit. I'll buy used and have money left over for and major repairs I don't feel like doing. But the reality is that modern cars are built way better than ever. A 1-2 year old vehicle is really good as new and shouldn't need any major repair. Not only that a certified pre-owned vehicle may also have a good warranty. Save your money and buy used.
