Perhaps a tactic called phishing (sp). The perp sends an official-looking email asking to verify some account info. If people don't notice the URL that contains an official look-alike website, folks will be asked to enter their username, password, SSN, credit card info, etc.

Perhaps it's a virus that scans or allows remote control of your computer while you sleep, when it's idle or when you're using it.

It's a good idea to invest in a software utility that alerts you when an internet spider is attempting to access your computer in the background. FWIW, I use a program called "Little Snitch" (Mac). There are comparable versions for Windoz machines.
