David............
I have a 1973.5T with CIS as well and yes the car should be running on its own when the engine is warmed up and the hand throttle down. If you need the throttle up to maintain the idle you have a mixture problem, or at least thats what happened to me.

I bought the adjustment tool for the CIS and I would die on exit ramps off the interstate. I had to use the hand throttle to keep the idle going...................turned out the adjustment screw for the mixture was frozen and although it felt like the screw was turning only the tool was!!!!!!!!!! Drove me and the mechanic nuts. It was not until I took off the air filter, held up the sensor plate arm by hand and applied force to the screw did I realize the problem....Keep that one in mind............ After a few adjustments, it runs like brand new.............I did however, replace the cold start valve, airbox, pop off valve, warm up regulator, injectors, fuel accumulator, new hoses, etc.

If your not getting fuel to the injectors its the accumulator, warm up regulator or your mixture. I do not go by CO mixture meters, but feel and performance now. This was an something a reliable and experienced mechanic told me who worked on older models.
Be careful on adjustments because you can get serious backfiring and if you do not have a pop off valve...........GET ONE!!!!!

Have the WUR pressures checked and adjusted. Fuel filters will clog easily if your tank is gunked up, so never let the gas get below 1/2. I change my filter every 5K as a precaution.

I recommend "Marvel Mystery Oil" as it was recommended to me for these older engines. It been around since 1923 as a super top end lubricant and is added to the gas. I pour in 4-6 ounces every third or fourth fill up. Great stuff........

Get to the Technical Articles and pull up the CIS trouble shooting guide for great direction. Good luck
