After replacing my engine I had a similiar problem. Not the smoking part but the starter would just barely turn the engine even with a full charge.
I removed and cleaned both ground conections (real pain) at bell housing and rear of block.
My problem solved, I would try it.
Electricity is a funny thing, you my be getting grounding through some other circuit causing the smoking. The other circuit being small gauge wire.
