I knew little about Jeeps when I bought it. A PO had pulled the 4 and put in a Willys straight 6 (direct bolt-in). The engine went South, couldn't find parts, and a friend had a rebuilt 283 sitting in his garage.
Very, very easy to do, several companies make (made?) conversion kits to attach the chevy bellhousing to the Jeep tranny.
Never had a bit of trouble with the tranny (3 speed). The OD made it a 6 speed, sort of. In fact, with the
V-8, I just left it in high range all the time except when 4-wheeling.
Didn't really feel underpowered with the I-6 (never had the 'Hurricane 4' when I had it. It was geared low and it was about revved out at 60 on the highway. Often drove it down to Taos.
