Hm. Was the competition one steel? My friend can do anything from "flexi-flyer" to "splitting maul" when it comes to steel. He might even be able to do something in titanium if you a$k nicely.
In the iaido world we use something called an "iaito" or "mogito" (depending on who you ask). Typically made from a beryllium/zinc alloy. Won't hold an edge and is about 70% the weight of a similarly-proportioned steel blade. That is, until we hit shodan, and then we're expected to use the real thing. Maybe there are "practice" jian available in this material?
