How about Total Seal rings? No end gap to worry about on the 2d ring (or 1st, depending on which you get as an overlapping seal).
From perusing posts here, it seems that ring thickness may be more of an issue. Well, actually it is wear on the ring lands in the piston - if the ring slots get too wide - that is the bad news, as it leads to ring breakage.
Do these pistons, which wore the cylinders wider, still have ring grooves within spec?
How about having the worn cylinders plated back to stock specs? I just had that done with some 95mm Alusils, which are now Nikasils. Not a $5 job, but price worthy compared to a new set. And I've heard of people doing this kind of thing with the early iron cylinders.
