The 911 was originally the 901. Peugot had the rights to model designations with the number "0" as the middle digit so Porsche had to change it.
BTW-The Peterbuilt I sometimes drive has the ignition on the left side but it is a PIA.
I'm told the location is so that a driver can start the rig without climbing in for pre-trip inspections.
