In 1955 Porsche decided to "separate" the 356s that came to the U.S. by calling them Continentals. 356s that stayed in Europe were called European. Each had an emblem on the front fender with either designation depending on their destination.
UNTIL....Ford complained and filed a lawsuit against Porsche for using the name Continental. Ford (Lincoln) had trademarked Continental years before. After 2900 356s produced in 1955, Porsche dropped the Continental.

Another trademark story.....
A man in SoCal heard rumors that Porsche was developing a new car in the early 90's to be called the Boxster. He went down to the patent/trademark office and registered the name Boxster. Just before the intro in 97, Porsche's lawyers registered the name Boxster in the U.S. They got it in all states except California. They contacted the man who had it registered to negotiate a deal. The man traded the Boxster trademark for a brand new 993 TT.
