UNTIL....Ford complained and filed a lawsuit against Porsche for using the name Continental. Ford (Lincoln) had trademarked Continental years before. After 2900 356s produced in 1955, Porsche dropped the Continental.
Just to give you an idea of what a simpler time that was, Ford's lawyers gave Porsche until the end of the model year before enforcing their copyright so that they would not have to change the name midstream in '55 M.Y.

If the tables were turned today and someone infringed on a Porsche trademark or copyright, Porsche would make them scrape the name off of every last car or truck.
