175,000 miles and running strong. That's impressive. Problems with these motors usually show up early, if they show up at all. That Pasha fellow (sp?) did a teardown of a M96 motor some time ago and the normal wear areas/surfaces looked really good IIRC, so if the motor has done that many miles it's probably a good one. Mind you it's entirely possible the motor in that car was replaced at some point. A lot of them were, especially the early early ones.
I have 147,000 kilometres on my MkII 996 and I do 25,000 per year, so I will have this kind of mileage on my car about in about five and a half years. Then again, the engine in my car was replaced at 70,000 kilometres, so my motor won't have that kind of mileage for another 9 years or so. I like the sounds of that actually. My car is great and at this point I will be happy to own and drive it for another 10 years.
Keep up with the routine maintenance and the cars really show how well they are built. Even at 8 years old and with as many miles as I have my car is like new in many ways.
