I've been spoiled since I have access to a lift at a shop. I couldn't imagine working on one of these cars without a lift, it makes things 1000% easier. As for fault lines, if your house starts shaking badly enough to knock over your lift you should be running for it and not worrying about your car. As long as it is anchored into a concrete pad of sufficient depth and reinforcement with bolts of adequate length you should not have much to worry about in even a moderately sever earthquake. I'd be more concerned about being under jack stands or a scissor if the ground started shaking.
