Protest of the Day

Two young women lay near-naked Friday at the corner of Broadway and Willamette Street — covered in red-tinted cornstarch, wrapped in cellophane and sprawled atop slabs of plastic foam.

It was part of a national campaign by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, using people to mimic packaged meat in an attempt to send a message: Meat is murder. The display met with mixed reactions from passers-*by and generated a counterprotest.

“To each his own,” said Brianna Jackson, 32.

“I think it’s pretty ridiculous,” said Doug Bulski, 28, who added, “It’s kind of neat on one level, for its entertainment value. It’s created quite a buzz.”

The two had just finished eating their lunch in the Broadway Plaza — a Cuban sandwich and a Reuben sandwich. “I’m a carnivore, and I wear leather,” Jackson said. “It’s a healthy part of my diet.”

This opinion was echoed when an observer started a counter*protest by holding up a cardboard sign that read “MMM … MEAT IS GOOOD 4 U,” and another held up a blown up picture of VooDoo Doughnut’s bacon maple bar.
