Years ago when I was flying out of TCA one of our older guys flying with us was an instructor. I had a full military ID at that time so could go anywhere on base with the car. Was heading down to the bowling alley (had a bar and grill there) for lunch and gave him a ride. Along the way we drove by the DC-3 and DC-4 that was on show there.

He asked if I would stop for a sec and we did so. He wrote something down, then we went on to have lunch. His next rotation he asked if we could go back down by the planes. He had copied his logbook page from years before and brought it with him.

Sure enough, he had flown this very DC-3 on display at Tempelhof Air Base in the Berlin Airlift. Tail numbers matched with the notation "coal inbound" on the log-page.

Most of us met Gail Halvorsen as he came by the old base during the Airlift ceremony. Really nice guy.
