This issue is actually a microcosm of why our country is in so much trouble. For whatever reason, personal responsibility just really doesn't exist anymore.
For whatever ails you, it's gotta be someone else's fault, or because of some reason beyond any of your control.
You're a fat pig?
Hey, it's not your fault! You're simply born too dumb (it's genetics fault, nothing you can do about it!), weren't raised right (it's your parent's fault!), have been exposed to too much advertising (it's the media's fault!), have to drive past too many McDs every day (it's Ronald McD's fault!), weren't served nutritious meals in school (it's the taxpayer's fault!), etc. etc. etc.
Always someone else's fault, and there's nothing you as an individual person can do about it. That goes for everything these days. Bought a house you can't afford and could never hope to afford, and now are getting foreclosed on? Bank's fault. Decided when you were healthy to not buy health insurance and now need it and don't have it? Govt's fault.
And now, even something as personal and basic as choosing what to shove in your own piehole is someone else's fault. Sheesh.
