My take:

Soft drinks, TV and video games, and convenience rule so many Americans today.

Kids don't get near the activity that they did 30-50 years ago.
So many just sit behind a computer keyboard for hours on end.
We never had a single cola in the house where I grew up.
In grocery checkout lines, I see carts stacked to the top with Cola's.
Drive in everything now....fast junk food, banks, pharmacies, etc, etc.
What happened to walking a couple hundred feet to do this kind of thing?

In America's defence, it is pretty tough to get a nice, healthy selection of food out of the house.
Most of the options are fairly horrid.
I spend the winters in Thailand.
The complete opposite.
Vast options for inexpensive, healthy food on every corner.
Look at the Thai population, and you don't see nearly the percentage of overweight folks.

I'd guess the stats are more like at least 50% (or more) of the American population is now overweight.
