The e36 is an excellent car. The M is a good choice as well. The door panels on these tend to come apart however, the M door panels don't have this problem.
I wouldn't hesitate getting a manual E36 M3 that is in good condition.
I've been a Factory Trained BMW tech since 1994 and in my opinion, the quality of the e36 is much better.
While the e46 is a good car as well, they do have a bit more issues than the e36.
