They were the old Foster slugs. I've never used the Brenneke or any of the more modern saboted slugs.

I agree, those just have to be superior to the Foster in just about every way. I would think the .50 caliber saboted slug would be akin to a .50 or .54 caliber muzzle loader shooting a Maxi Ball or something. I'll personally vouch for the .54 caliber with a 460 grain bullet - I've killed over two dozen deer with just that combination. Full penetration on every hit, with not a single recovered bullet.

So, reflecting on that a bit more, I'm sure you are right. Stay with the Brennekes or .50 caliber slugs, and I'm sure you would be fine.
