That is the problem with the later cars that use the smaller starter. TechnoDuck had mentioned that after he broke his bracket while doing his modifications, he replaced the sleeved bracket with an early one (No sleeve).
When he tried to start the car, it would not run. He eventually figured out that the small starter was producing excessive EMI, which messed up the injector signaling. He replaced the bracket with one with a sleeve, and everything worked again.
At least you are not alone....
