get under the car and check out the rear shift linkage. Are the bushings FUBAR or are they tight? Should be pretty easy to tell if everything is tight there.
Next, get under the car and check the front ball cup. Pretty hard to see, but if someone else is in the car and shifting the gears, you will probably see the shift rod moving. Follow it to it's end and the front ball cup is located there (providing it's still connected). If it's not, buy the insert, pull out the old insert, and replace. Use a ratchet strap to pull the cup and new insert back onto the ball.
