Back in 1972 I wanted to establish some credit. I borrowed a grand from a bank to buy my perfect stereo system. It was a quadraphonic system. At that time 8 track was clearly better than cassettes so I went 8 track & turntable. Quadraphonic was the precursor to today’s surround sound system. There were only a few records or 8 track tapes made in discrete quadraphonic. Most stuff was just stereo with some added processing to fake the quad sound. I used that system until the early 90s. The amp is up in my attic still. It is probably 3 feet wide and made of wood. Way bigger than standard component size stuff. It was 200 watts per channel x 4 channels. I had Advent speakers that flat out pumped their guts out.
Just a year later I bought a brand new 1973 Super Bug for $2,700. So my stereo was about 40% of the cost of a cheap car. I guess that would be like a $8,000 stereo today.
