Intended use will point to one over the other. Just plinking and general fooling around, go with the smaller of the two and save money every time you pull the trigger. If you are hunting, or invading a neighboring state, the .308 may serve you better. The .308 is much more expensive to shoot, however, with no real advantage in accuracy, range, or trajectory at any sort of useful range. It just hits harder. If you need that, fine - but most people who aren't hunting don't.
