Are flipping kidding me? So as I extrapolate this out, my degree of fault should that scenario play out to me would be that i chose to get behind the wheel and drive and take that particular route?

The other points are valid and worth of repeating, but this? Let's embolden the lack of personal accountability in the world just a wee bit more.
