My dad was an engineer (electrical) and I seem to remember he only started out somewhere around 3000 or a little above in the early 60's. Of course he was working for NASA and they are not known for the highest starting salaries.
I would guess there was a decimal misplaced and a mechanical engineer made $500 a year in 1910. That would sound more realistic.
