SearchTempest - The EASY way to search Craigslist lets you search multiple craigslists within a mile range. For things like vehicles it is great even if you only use it to have more cars as a basis for comparison. $3k is way too high for a parts car, that would def need to have more unique options in good working order even for a later model. I bought my 83 ugly with a bad HG but driveable for $500 and got a late engine w/all externals for $200 (wouldn't trust it without a rebuild though). That's the bottom end of what you should expect to pay but definitely not unheard of.
