Auto Transmission - neutral safety switch

how important is the neutral safety switch on an auto tranny?

I replaced the one on the Vanagon I own but am still getting no crank
intermittently (lights come on & replaced ignition switch; cleaned/checked wiring, so figure it is still the safety switch).

I am thinking of just connecting the wires together instead of the Fushlinger thing to keep one from trying to start the
vehicle in drive ranges.

How bad would it be if somebody someday tried to start the thing in a drive range?
