Funny, just replaced one on a 2002 Neon yesterday. 29 bucks retail. Pretty accessible on a FWD. No one will have to guess whether the car is in gear and I have to think that's a good thing.
BTW, I think the thing is in series with the brake light switch as well. So your jumper job will have to be straight from the ignition to the relay. The ECM may pick this up and shoot a code.
