when the L starts the paint code it stands for LACK (PAINT) like L041 for black this is used on the later cars (from what i can remember) after 76 . before that porsche had no set in stone contract with glasurit .so when they would sublet cars out to other body builders like karmann . karmann would use other brands of paint . the H stands for herberts , the G for glasurit , and the L for lechler OR lessonal aka sikkens . there were 4 brands of paint used on porsches before 76 . when it comes to looking up the paint formula you do not need the G, H, or L when it comes to the early codes how ever you need to put the L in when looking up the late colors . when it comes to a car like the 914 porsche only did the design of the car . vw contracted them to do so like with the 924 944 models . becouse karmann had no contract with BASF (glasurit ) but porsche did there was a loop hole . at that time karmann would use glasurit for the cars getting shipped to porsche and lechler for the cars going to vw . becouse the US market would get all 914 body cars under the porsche name here in the states we would get our cars badged with ether the L or G . and that goes for all the cars built in the karmann plant but that also goes for all the cars built by other coach builders doing cars for porches . all brands of paint lines have changed 2 times from when the early cars were painted so it makes no dererents what paint brand is used becouse the mixxing formulas have to change as the tints used change . like from glasurits single stage 21 line to there 22 line of paint and there base clear 54 line to the 55 line and now to the 90 line .
