I just got back in town and the first thing I did was to check this site -- wow, thanks for all the suggestions! One of the things that caught my eye was the post about the tach being a problem. Now that I think about it, the tach does not even twitch when I crank the engine. I can't check it until tomorrow evening, but will sure give it a try and let you know what happens.
