as mentioned in my previous "super duper match from hell " post we iz UPGRADING THE HELL out of it.
TODAY is the day i go to airport and meet w/phil arrington(arringtonaccuracy.com) and make the dastardly handoff of my pride and joy. it will take months for him to get to this and thats OTAY as we didnt get drawn for squat this year hunting and its looking skeetchee if my son will be able to get off work to get over the counter tags for colorado.
so after a long call with phil..............we have OPTED OUT of a smith ent/sadlak/brookfield type-genre scope mt. they say they will return to ZERO but in reality if you own the above mt. or a 3rd generation springfield M1-A scope mt. you are best served NEVER TAKING IT OFF EVAR or risk loosing yer ZERO. and thats akin to cutting my HUEVOS OFF!
since i always WANT THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS cuz i can...........we want a springfield that is LEGAL for 1000yd match shoots w/out a scope, and the ability to add a scope for hunting.
well ol phil arrington has the ANSWER! a leatherwood 1913 rail going along top of receiver with its rear attachment point being the clip feed point. totally anchored. and thats key. why? porqui? because M-14's have a forward and rearward RECOIL! now what we will do is get some zoomy azz QD scope mt rings. not cheap azz ones. these will allow me to remove scope in mere seconds AND WILL POSITIVELY RETAIN MY COVETED "ZERO". it will reattach in seconds and life is good. once again we have a MULTI-PORPOISED FIRE SPOON!
now with the smith/sadlak/brookfield type designs what you have to watch for is TOLERANCES! each and every M1-A/M-14 has DIFFERENT RECEIVER TOLERANCES and this is CRITICAL for mounting these type scope mounts. ie. angle of dangle is always different, thereby making these uber critical as far as mounting them to spoon receiver and ya better have yer ducks in a row and a machine shop with precision tools.
now as far as sadlaks aluminum lightweight scope mt...............well these aint da way to go. alum is soft. when spoon fired its back to newtons law. for every action an equal opposite reaction. once again forward and rearward recoil. these beats the POO POO out of these aluminum mounts and sooner if not later yer ZERO is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off due to pounding of alum contact points on receiver.
so if hell bent like i thought i was for a sadlak/smith mt. stick with their STEEL or TITANIUM mounts and now ya know the reason.
now i will be saving weight, which was entire crux of da biscuit and i will have attained my lofty goal of scope retaining ZERO when removed and placed back on numerous times.
think about how life is so much better some days w/out a scope and the ability to pull out of backpack/truck and place on and off at yer lil hearts DESIRE and NEVER LOOSE YER ZERO and SAVE WEIGHT!
and the best part.............phil sells these mil spec 1913 picatinny rails for $129. the QD rings i am not sure of cost yet.
and thats MY MULTI TASKING M1-A/M-14 ADVICE FOR THE DAY!
