When Peich "merged" VW and Audi, it was big news that he took something like 11 separate platforms and ended up with 4. Total.
There absolutely will be the same thing happening again. The 911 may even share a platform after a number of years. Will there even be a rear engine car in 5-6 years? Maybe not.
It's going to happen.
