I have never heard of doing the entire car at once. Ususally it's a 2'x2' patch, or at most a panel at a time.

As far as swirl marks, usually those are actual scratches in the paint from rougher grits of rubbing compound. Is it actual scratches or just built up places of wax on the surface. If it's the first, then something was scratching the surface probably in your towels, and you would need to use a fine rubbing compound to remove. If it is just wax buildup, then more buffing should take it off.

I am personally a fan of 3M products, and while they are pricier, they yield very good results.
