Three questions:
- Is stainless the preferred finish for backpacking/outdoor carry use?
- Is 4.62 the preferred barrel length for backpacking/outdoor carry use?
- I shoot .45 now, with the Vaquero is .357 or .45 preferred?
Lastly, any holster recommendations...

stainless is best period as far as rust and holster wear.
the BEST holsters i have found are BIANCHI hands down
if ya buy the vaquero in .357 you can also buy a marlin /winchester lever action rifle in .357 as well as some older winchesters in .45LC.
i dont buy NOTHING anymore unless its stainless. PERIOD or it has a HK "HE" hostile environment finish. blue guns just dont handle any moisture without out uber care.
and a rusted gun is kind of like the let down ya get when yer weiner dont work no more.
i like 3"-4" barrels for general outdoor carry unless im hunting w/a pistol. then i want 6-8".
if im just camping/fishing in a relatively safe area meaning a non bear area, i will take my 2" smith "J" frame .357. its lightweight. you figure out real fast how much a 6-8" .44 mag weighs humping that damn thing all over hells creation.
