"Right now, the situation with Barolo (on average) is as follows:
1996: Emerging. Give it another year or two and go for it.
1997: Shut down
1998: Almost completely open now. Give it another year or drink now.
1999: Shut down
2000: Started shutting down around 2004. Are shut down now. Bizarre vintage to understand.
2001: Remain quite open and accessible with aeration. Do not look like are going to shut down, except for some of the old style ones.
2002: Diluted and tragic. Stay away.
2003: Will probably never shut down. Fruity like a Gattinara or a Valtellina.
2004: Exceptional early complexity and very open. Do not look like shutting down anytime soon."
