Unhappy Houston, we have a problem

Hey everyone.

I come to you with a heavy heart.

I have my car's motor out to fix some oil leaks, change the clutch, rebuild the carbs, and install tensioner guards. After days of cleaning, rebuilding carbs, dealing with troublesome fuel systems, setting valves, finding a very bad chain issue, and general good progress, I found the last nail in the coffin of this motor.

In a desperate last ditch effort to save this motor I ask: (already knowing the answer) Can I change the intermediate shaft without splitting the case?

Yes, I did notice that the intermediate shaft bearing is all hosed up too.

Just for the sake of completeness, here's the chain issue I found:

Yes, that is a very slack port side chain. Yes, those are mechanical tensioners. I suspect they are the cause of all my trouble in the first place.

This is heartbreaking because this motor has good compression, it ran when I pulled it out, I just put about $2k into parts, and in the end I don't have anything to show for it except for a porsche coffee table that shouldn't leak oil.

Are there any Pelicans in the greater Houston area, or just about anywhere in Eastern TX, who have an old 2.0, 2.2, or 2.4 longblock sitting around gathering dust? If you do, I'd love to hear from you.

Here's the car that this engine came out of:

Thanks to all for any help you can render.
