I have an '85, considerably younger car...
I did the very same test, used a long screwdriver (and gloves and safety goggles) and gave the valve a very slight push. I figured if there was anything in it, the hiss would be obvious and I would then take it to a shop. As it turned out, my system was COMPLETELY empty.
