Yeah the "friend of Jack" thing kind of threw me too. Maybe it's a regional saying. Left coast it is; "Red to yellow, deadly fellow, red to black, venom lack."

I was back east in Virginia mountain biking one day and came across a cottonmouth. Foul creature and much more aggressive than any rattlesnack I've encountered (and I've run across alot of rattle snakes in my adventures). This snake actively pursued me. I was pretty surprised to see it that far north, always thought they were further south.
