Thinking about selling my 1971 911T
Hello all
I have a 1971 911T that I've owned since summer 2007. I rescued it from a very neglectful owner and have been slowly bringing it back to health ever since. I have spent a lot of time and money thus far, and am at a point where I need to re-evaluate the logic of throwing thousands of dollars at an old car at this time in my life.
I don't need to sell this car right now. The only way I will is for offers over a certain dollar figure in my mind, one that would allow me to buy a later model 911 I can drive often and without worry.
The car:
71 911T coupe. No sunroof. 5 spd 901 (true 1969 901 gearbox with 69 clutch and flywhee); car was converted from sportomatic many years ago. Mileage is approx 72k. Odometer works and mileage corresponds with all records I have.
Sepia brown. Repaint circa 1991. Looks nice, overspray in front trunk. A couple of blisters (1 main one on the driver's side door). The repaint was part of an extensive restoration done at the time. I have many, many receipts and records for the work.
Tan interior. Car would come with the original basketweave insert non sport seats. I have excellent Recaro SE with wedge engineering adapter brackets in it right now, and these seats would be available separately/for additional $.
Same goes for the 350mm Momo Prototipo. Stock wheel would come with car.
Car has PEP retracting seat belts.
Headliner all there, some stains but no major rips or anything. A couple of small dash cracks, not bad.
Doors have map pockets mounted and in decent shape. The larger door pockets come with the car but are not mounted. Passenger side excellent, driver's side needs the trim. Missing some of the hardware.
No radio.
Carpet in good shape, was replaced during resto. Some minor tears around shift tower.
Back seats in good shape.
Engine is a rebuilt 2.2t (very little paperwork on the rebuild, but can provide oyou contact info for the individual who rebuilt it & sold it to me) with zeniths and safety collars. It runs strong and was literally just tuned up incl valve adjustment, magnecor wires, plugs, carb tuning etc. Throttle linkage nice and tight. Brad Penn 20/50w since I got it.
This is not the orig engine. I believe the engine that came in the car is the original one and it will be included with sale. That engine is a core longblock (low compression and some oil leaks, but no dead holes).
I have a nice set of US (assume US as they do not say made in italy anywhere) Weber 40s I rebuilt along with K&N filters/rain trays available separately.
Distributor is tight and advances correctly. I have a 0 231 159 006 911E distributor with petronix in excellent shape available separately.
Car has a permatune CDI in it but includes a core (unknown condition) Bosch unit.
HE's are in good shape, as is the Bischoff muffler. New muffler gaskets, bolts, and muffler straps.
Trans shifts very well. New ball cup bushing. Leaks from the seal up front. Have that seal as well as speedo drive seal and just need to install them. Might get to this, might not. Swepco.
Wheels are flat 15x6 Fuchs in nice shape. Polished petals. Nearly new BF Goodrich G sport 205/60 tires.
Suspension consists of new Bilstein HDs all around. Brand new Elephant Racing A arm bushings, camber plate bushings installed along with new OEM turbo tie rods and OEM ball joints. A arms in excellent condition. I have new in package Elephant Racing rear spring plate and trailing arm bushings, not installed at this time as I was looking for SC spring plates 1st. Car would come with all elephant racing parts not yet installed.
No sway bars. Does not appear to have ever had sways. Stock torsion bars.
Front brakes completely rebuilt and about 100 miles on them. New Zimmerman vented rotors, pads, rebuilt calipers, hard lines, flex lines etc. Master Cylinder rebuilt by previous owner and seems to be in good shape.
I have new rear pads, rotors, rebuild kits, and ss flex lines but they are not installed. Rear brakes have plenty of life left as is. ebrake works.
Car also has new Rennline smuggler's box battery kit with new Odyssey 925 battery.
Currently, new Bosch euro H4s are on the car but the car will come with original sugar scoop headlights. The euro H4s could be negotiated into the sale or sold separately.
The bad:
Car needs rocker repair work on both sides. Driver's side was patched marginally years ago and needs to be corrected. Passenger side needs replacement as well. Detailed photos will be available. Kidney bowl and torsion tube areas, as well as floors are good as far as we can tell.
Front pan was replaced 20 years ago and is good.
Idiot previous owner cut into the rear quarter panels to mount speakers, so the speakers will need to be removed and the holes (5"?) be filled.
lower corners of windshield solid but some paint bubbling. Not crusty or rusty though.
Overall car presents very well, especially if you don't look in the trouble spots. I It drives nice, sounds nice, and I'm either going to just keep going with it no matter how long it takes to make it right, or somebody is going to make me a reasonable and equitable offer for it. I have a 3 ring binder full of receipts dating back to approx 1990 and incl everything I've done.
I'm just not sure what the right thing to do is. Your thoughts?
