Well, the 2.2E MFI engine seems to be nearest to your target. I recently took a 2.4T engine, had the MFI pump rebuilt to E spec ( Gus, Pacific Injection ), had the T throttle bodies re-built to E spec ( Matt, Eurometrix ), replaced the T cams with E cams, Had the cylinders bored to 85mm ( ebs ), installed J&E pistons 9:5.1 ( ebs )and finally installed MSD.

With the 2.2E engine, you've already have the cams & MFI needed. However, you'll probably need to refurbish the TB's & Pump anyway. I don't know, probably a better ? for a professional early engine builder.

Also, the 2.2E has E numbers on it's case.
