Not to throw this into PARF, but you may also want to consider your position in the political spectrum.
I'd love to live in Boston for a few years. I lived in the opposite end of the state and spent some time there and a lot of time in Cape Cod.
But I expect that my political slant would be an issue, unless I commuted from New Hampshire.
