When my older son was about 5 or six we were at a stop light and he started pointing exitedly at the SUV in front of us. He said "Look dad! African People!" I looked at the people in front of me wondering first how to explain race to a five year old and then why he was calling a yuppie driving a white Land Cruiser African.
At that time he was in to African nature programs and we encouraged it. The people in all the shows drove white Land Cruisers into the bush. That was the only time he saw Land Cruisers and every show had Land Cruisers in it. Therefore, light colored Land Cruiser equaled African people. He hadn't even noticed the difference between white and black people. Once I understood, I assured him that the people in front of us must indeed be African explorers back home from Safari and he was quite impressed.
