Until this recession. Starting about 2-3 years ago, the postal service started falling into it's current crisis, what with mail volumes falling. It has been borrowing from the Treasury, appx $10BN to date, but it's borrowing limit is $15BN which it will hit within a year. At that point the postal service will be out of money, and the crisis will be at Congress' door.

I don't see the real problem with 5 (or even 4) day a week service. That seems like the natural solution.
It is illegal for any company to compete with the postal service in regard to first class mail. No one else can deliver letters and such.
The answer is to deregulate the postal service, allow companies like fed-ex or UPS to compete with the postal service openly and fairly and then completely eliminate the postal service if it becomes obsolete and useless.

If the postal service rises to the occasion and cuts costs and streamlines the business and becomes competitive, they get to survive and we get reasonable service for a reasonable price again.
