Sounds like the sides of the belt are wearing due to shims. There should be a total of 6 shims in the alternator/fan pulley assembly. These shims are used to get proper belt tension, but also to maintain the proper plane relationship between the crankshaft pulley and the alternator/fan pulley. If there are less than the required 6 shims, the relationship between the crankshaft pulley and fan pulley will be out of whack and you'll see accelerated belt wear.
To adjust the proper belt tension, you add or subtract the appropriate shims from the inside of the pulley half and put them on the outside of the pulley cup.
