10 years ago my current wife and I were in a custody battle for my daughter from my first marriage. My former father in law was a surgeon with deep pockets and he funded my ex wifes legal expenses. I had to ask my family and also my wife's family for money. My current wifes family contributed 1000 dollars to help with the legal expenses.
During the course of an lively discussion about money, my wife reminded me of her families contribution. I had truly forgotten about it until that moment. Her mom and dad could really use the money now as they have both retired and the economy has taken its toll.
I would like to pay him back but don't want to make a big show of it and it is not even neccessary that he knows. I am not sure he would accept the repayment at this point.
Any suggestions on how to give somebody a thousand dollars?
