Sounds like you're ahead of the game.
A 914 would be a great starter porsche.
You will likely find spending more on a very nice example will cost you less than trying to keep after one that is needed.
They are very fun to drive. Just keep in mind, the same thing that make them so quick turning, can make it quick to get into trouble.
The 951's (944 turbo's) are also alot of performance for the money. . . but feel comparatively heavy. Better for high speed performance. IMO Also, maintenance on the 951 can be a real chore. Things like the timing
belt. Most cars, that need major items replaced at regular intervals, were designed to have reasonable access. . but it is a pain to do on those cars. (mini rant. . since this is "OT rantings" section)
Hopefully some 914 addicts will chime in here and can tell you more about problem spots, and what to avoid.
